Bathroom Lighting Upgrade – From Fluorescent Soffit to Modern Recessed Cans

The homeowner in Del Mar, CA wanted to update their bathroom by removing the bulky 1970s/1980s fluorescent soffit box with plastic diffuser panels. The old setup felt dated and closed-in, so we opened up the ceiling and gave the room a cleaner, brighter look.

Step 1 – Removing the Old Soffit & Fixture

We began by demolishing the soffit that housed the four-foot fluorescent fixture. Once the soffit and light box were removed, the ceiling was opened up and ready for repair.

Step 2 – Drywall Repair

After the soffit was taken out, new drywall was installed to close in the ceiling and restore a flat, continuous surface. Joints were taped, floated, and sanded smooth to prepare for texture.

Step 3 – Layout & Placement of Recessed Lights

With the ceiling patched, we measured and cut for recessed LED lights. Placement was carefully planned over the vanity and mirror to provide balanced, even light.

Step 4 – Texture & Finish

The ceiling was retextured and blended with the surrounding area, leaving no sign that a soffit had ever been there.

Step 5 – Final Result

The dated soffit and fluorescent fixture were replaced with sleek, energy-efficient recessed LEDs. The bathroom now feels larger, brighter, and more modern.

Result: Removing the soffit completely transformed the space — eliminating the old boxed-in look and replacing it with a streamlined ceiling design.
